About Matera
Matera is a town in the south of Italy known for its special dwellings, called the Sassi.
The Sassi are ancient cave settlements that were carefully restored in the 1980s to create habitable houses, and visiting Matera is like taking a step back in time!
There are many religious buildings that you can visit, including the Roman cathedral, which offers a magnificent view of the city, the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, the Church of the Madonna of Idris, the Convicinio di Sant’Antonio, the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi and the Monastery of Sant’Agosto.
If you want to understand Matera’s past in more detail, visit La Casa Grotta di vico Solitario, which explains the origins of the city through recreated cave dwellings. MOOM is also worth a visit and explains how olive oil is made in the region, or stop by Palazzo Lanfranchi for the Museum of Modern Art.
Finally, to finish your visit, you must go to Castello Tramontano – it is a vast 16th-century castle that was built to control the population. The view from the hill is really quite magnificent!
