About Vatican City

Vatican City is the official residence of the Pope and the world’s smallest sovereign state. It has one of the richest art collections in the world, which you will find in its numerous galleries and halls of the Museums. Vatican City is home to the sublime Sistine Chapel, which was built between 1473 and 1481 under the watch of Pope Sixtus IV and whose ceiling was famously painted by Michelangelo – it is one of the city’s most important attractions. However, the cityscape of Vatican City is dominated by St Peter’s Square and St Peter’s Basilica. The church was built in a Renaissance style and was first opened in 1626. Inside, you’ll find some glorious works of art, including Pietà by Michelangelo.
