About Rome
Rome is the capital of Italy and is one of the oldest cities in Europe. In fact, it is nicknamed “the Eternal City” because Romans believed that, no matter what happened to the empire, Rome would go on forever. And they were not wrong! Stepping foot in Rome is like taking a step back in time as there are ancient ruins and monuments dotted all about the city. Mixed with the ancient is the vibrancy of modern-day Italian life, with bustling cafes, gelaterias and green parks.
Key attractions include, of course, the almighty Colosseum. This ancient amphitheatre once accommodated between 50,000 and 75,000 spectators, all there to cheer on their favourite gladiator! Not far from here, you’ll find the Arc of Constantine, the Roman Forum and the Pantheon.
Rome also boasts some utterly delightful architecture, including the glorious Trevi Fountain, which is the most famous fountain in Rome. Tradition has it that you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain and this will guarantee that, one day, you will return to Rome.
Within the city, there is also the Vatican, which is an independent land-locked state and the smallest country in the world. It is the main residence of the Pope and includes famous monuments, including the St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Palace, the Vatican Museums and the majestic Sistine Chapel.
