About Normandy

Normandy is most famous as the location of the D-Day landings, which took place during World War II on June 6th, 1944. It was intended to liberate France from the German forces, and indeed marked a turning point in the development of the Second World War. The best-known beaches are Omaha Beach and Utah Beach, and the American cemetery is located on the cliffs of Omaha Beach. But the region of Normandy has a history and culture that stretches beyond the D-Day landings. For example, Deauville in Normandy is known around the world for its famous American film festival, while Bayeux is home to the famous Tapestry. Mont St Michel is also a lovely location to visit and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – climbing to its summit is a little bit hard, but worth it for the amazing view.

A driver will pick you up from your hotel in Bayeux. This tour lasts approximately 9 hours.
2

Meet your guide

You will meet your guide in Normandy at a meeting point in Saint-Lô.
3

Saint-Lô

From the meeting point, you will explore Saint-Lô with your knowledgeable guide. Saint-Lô played an important role in both WWI and WWII. In 1914 and 1915, Saint-Lô housed the temporary hospital No. 2 of the 10th Army Corps. Meanwhile, during WWII, Saint-Lô was occupied by German forces. Due to its strategic position, Saint-Lô suffered badly during WWII as German and Allied forces battled for control. In fact, it was nicknamed The Capital of the Ruins by Samuel Beckett. However, despite its near-destruction, Saint-Lô was one of the key cities to the opening of the Falaise Gap, which ultimately allowed Allied forces to free northern France.
4

Omaha Beach

Your tour continues to Omaha Beach, which was a landing area used by Allied forces in the WWII D-Day invasion. The beach itself is dotted with German bunkers that can be seen even today, and there is also an interesting museum, called Musée Mémorial d'Omaha Beach (optional visit inside - fee not included).
5

Utah Beach

Utah Beach was the code name for one of the five sectors of the Allied invasion during D-Day. The mission, mainly undertaken for US forces, was to secure the beachhead on the Cotentin Peninsula, which was important to the port at Cherbourg.
