About Siena
Siena is a charming city in Tuscany, boasting cobbled streets, and magnificent main square and a breath-taking cathedral.
The historic center of Siena has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and it is one of the nation’s most-visited tourist attractions. Siena is famous for the Palio horse race, which is held twice a year. During the event, the city is transformed, with Piazza del Campo (the city’s main square) becoming a horse-race track! There are many festivities and shows that take place, and it is a very vibrant time to visit.
Siena Cathedral’s construction began in the 12th century and it is widely considered a masterpiece of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture. The pulpit is an octagonal 13th-century masterpiece sculpted by Nicola Pisano, with lion pedestals and biblical bas-relief panels. The Renaissance frescos by Ghirlandaio and Pinturicchio are particularly delightful.
Even if you are not visiting during the Palio, visiting Piazza del Campo is a must. It beautifully unfurls before Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia, creating a magical scenery. Palazzo Salimbeni is also intriguing to see, along with the Baptistery of St John.
