About Pisa
Pisa is a city in Tuscany best known for its iconic Leaning Tower. The tower is, in fact, the bell tower of the city’s cathedral in Piazza dei Miracoli.
The tower’s construction started in 1173 and it was completed in 1399. However, it leans nearly 4 degrees due to its unstable foundation, which (due to the softness of the ground) could not withstand the enormous weight of the tower. The tower actually underwent remedial work between 1993 and 2001 to reduce the lean, which at its worst was 5.5 degrees.
No visit to Pisa would be complete without visiting inside the tower and climbing the many steps up to the viewing floor for an unbeatable view of Pisa. We also recommend visiting inside the cathedral as it is a notable example of Romanesque architecture.
Aside from the delights of Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa is also home to the University of Pisa, which has a history going back to the 12th century, and also the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, founded by Napoleon in 1810. It is a city of great educational important and so attracts many international students.
