About Palermo
Palermo is the largest city on the island of Sicily. It has a complex history and that is exemplified through its magnificent architecture and unique cultural and cuisine.
Among the monuments to visit, there are the palaces of Palermo, including the Norman Palace, Costantino Palace and Zisa Palace. The Norman Palace hosts a palatine chapel, where you can admire fine medieval mosaics.
But the architectural delights don’t stop there. Other gems are the Cathedral of Palermo and the Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele, which is the largest theater in Italy and the third largest in Europe. There are also many city squares to enjoy – Quattro Canti in the historic center is the most famous but we love Piazza Pretoria and its famous fountain, while Piazza Bellini is surely the prettiest.
Finally, to add some originality to your trip, go to the Capuchin catacombs. Here you can see 8,000 mummified corpses arranged according to their gender and social status. Interestingly, the mummies of these catacombs have the particularity of being dressed because the families regularly offered new clothes to the deceased.
