About Marseille
Marseille is the oldest city in France, founded by the Greeks in 600 BC. You could be forgiven for thinking it a city only for those interested in French history, but it is strikingly diverse. It is called the “city of 111 quarters” because of the changing faces of the city. While there are plenty of historic attractions, such as the famous fortress of Château d’If, there are also examples of modern architecture, like Mucem, which houses a museum dedicated to Mediterranean cultures. There are also several beautiful churches, including Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde with its sublime painted ceilings, and La Major Cathedral.
Marseille would not be the same without its magnificent Calanques National Park. This is a stretch of limestone cliffs and secluded beaches lapped by turquoise waters and decorated with magical sea caves. A self-paddled kayak tour here is highly recommended to take in its splendour!
