About Kilkenny
Kilkenny is a town south-west of Dublin in the province of Leinster. It is characterized by its historical monuments, which give it a medieval aspect, although there are very interesting influences from the Middle Ages that make a vacation to Kilkenny particularly wonderful for those interested in historic architecture.
Kilkenny has admirably preserved medieval streets and houses, as well as wonderful religious buildings, such as the Anglican Saint-Canice cathedral and the Catholic Sainte-Marie cathedral. It also has a Catholic priory that dates back to 1225 called the Black Abbey, and a castle that symbolizes the Norman occupation of Ireland in the 13th century.
Setting Kilkenny’s wonderful architecture aside, there are also some unique attractions to explore, such as Smithwick’s, which is Ireland’s oldest brewery and is located on the site of the St Francis Abbey. Today, you can visit the Smithwick’s Experience, which is a museum dedicated to the brewery.
